This is another WQ6X WAE Cw contest from Ramona .
It was the Best of times, it was the WORST of times.
I had a LoT of hope for this year's WAE Cw contest.
Getting a late start Friday evening, I missed out on
a good 40-meter opening to EU. However, 20-meters throughout
the night certainly made up for it. After a sleep break 15 & 20
meters were AWEsome throughout the day on Saturday. Working EU
on 40 & 80-meters is always a challenge. The 2-el Shorty-40 Yagi
gave directionability. Unfortunately having only a coaxial Bazooka
inverted Vee for 80 was of no value for working EU.

Sunday morning began OK, with some AMAZINGLY STRONG signals on 20 & 15.
Then around 19:00z it all FELL APART and was splotchy the rest of the day.
10-meters was a NO SHOW in Ramona, and looking at other Southwest entries
seemed to be a no-show for just about everybody. Bummer DEWD.
Running the N1MM+ software made QTC message handling as easy
as a bunch of orderly CLICKS.

Bottom-line is I can say WQ6X got to play around in the WAE CW contest.
Look for WQ6X in the WAE RTTY GiG in November in between my shifts for
NX6T in the JIDX Ssb contest.

I was expecting maybe if I was lucky 30 to 35 qsos at the most due
to yet another 2024 contest weekend being spoiled by horrible solar
storms and flares which has a negative impact on my northern
latitude QTH plus my broken rotor fixed on LP to EU and only 100w.
instead wound up with 170qs out of about 200 EU stns heard, strange
but I'll take it. Love messing with antenna and prop theory!

This was my first ever WAE CW Contest. I was not able to start on
time due to the Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club Meeting on Friday
night that I have to attend since I am the Secretary. By the
time I got home I had to get some sleep. I woke up pretty early
and started in on the contest. 80 was empty and 40 seemed to
only have stateside ragchew contacts going on. I found 20 meters
to be open a little and that seemed to be the place where the WAE
action was. It took me quite a bit of time listening to catch
the flow of things with the QTCs added in on this contest. Later,
when I ran out of people to work, I switched to 15 and things
picked up again. There was a little activity on 10 but nothing
in Europe for me. Mid to late morning on Saturday I started
running out of people to work anywhere, so it was break-time.
After lunch I came back and found that things were still not so
good. Late afternoon things picked up nicely, especially on 20.
Sunday I was not able to operate until the afternoon due to other
obligations. Conditions seemed a little better Sunday. I
finally figured out the QTCs near the end of my available time
and got many of them sent out. The European ops are really good
at copying CW and typing! I doubt I will ever be able to receive
those. I found the Bandmap to be largely unhelpful as usual,
which is probably my fault due to my settings. I know that I am
hurt very badly by not having a directional antenna but that is
just the way it is.

Talking about heat, this was the worse contest for me.
Had min 34c but most of the day hours between 37c to 40c in the shack...
very hard to resist and keep the concentration with QTCs.
The stagnant hot weather didn't bring a breeze but -on the good side-
the bands were extremely quiet, no typical summer QRN noise at all.
The propagation was enjoyable, even the 80 allowed unexpected QSOs..
HS, VK,RW0,V8, and others. 10m was the expected miss, opened mainly to SA,
btw from the same direction several US stations were worked.
15M was amazing, opened 24/24.
This is my personal best in WAE and hopefully the new country high.
Congratulations to Manfred, the unbeatable WAE king!
Thanks everyone for the QSOs and QTCs, especially those who sent by hand!

THE WAE IS THE ONLY MAJOR CONTEST THAT DOES NOT HAVE A SEPARATE
POWER CATEGORY FOR QRP (5W CW AND 10W SSB). THIS IS A SHAME
BECAUSE IT IS A LLITTLE UNFAIR TO INCLUDE US 5W CW QRP STATIONS IN
THE LOW POWER (100W) SECTION. I ALWAYS LIKE TO COMPARE MY QRP
RESULTS WITH OTHER QRP STATIONS, BUT THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE WITH
WAE CONTEST. PLEASE CONSIDER HAVING A QRP CATEGORY FOR 2025.

The extra skill needed to negotiate the QTCs make this a great contest.

This is my new call sign in Hokkaido to participate in this contest. Sending QTC is exciting.

I enjoyed QSO with European stations very much although the condition is not so good.

No QSO on 80m and only 1 QSO on 10m. 15m is rather good.

I am looking forward to the next.

Thank you everyone! 73 - Masa

First time working the contest, I stayed on 15 mts but had some hard time making QSOs, anyway, I tried some Run mode. Thanks to all stations that made the heavy lifting of my weak signal. 73

Peter DK0KTL/ DJ2AX

This is my third or fourth time in this contest, and I like it more every year. More than doubled my score from last year.

The only two things I would change in this contest is:

1. Make QTCs go both ways (EU to DX). Or, I'll have to operate from EU some year. . .

2. Make this a 24 hour contest. It gets to be a slog.

Had a great time, and enjoyed listening to the old speed demons out there!

I did it again... although I can't win anything - there is no QRP classification in WAE. Since 2011 I only transmit CW and with 5 watts and I make life difficult for other OP's - especially in summer propagation... In WAE 2024 I was on the TRX repeatedly for 21 hours. With 25 meters of wire above the ground via SG239 antenna tuner and a vertical dipole for 15 m band I was heard by 153 DX stations in 23 DXCC on all continents. Thanks to all who heard me - it was a lot of fun to improve my result from 2023.
